In 2 Group Exhibitions at the Gallery Night Ithaca December 2022

This is an invitation in the form of newsletter.
Finally, I have a chance to present my work to Ithaca local community. I will be exhibiting some of my works at 2 Group Exhibitions at December´s Gallery Night.

December 2022 Juried Show at the State of the Art Gallery

I will be presenting alongside 57 other artists. The works at this exhibition are mostly medium and small size. The gallery itself is very interesting to me since it is a fine art gallery run by artist collective comprised of 29 members from the Finger Lakes region of the State of New York. It is quite an active gallery with rich program.
The show will run from December 1, 2022 until January 1, 2023.
Opening reception will be on Friday, December 2, 5–8 pm.
I will be present in the gallery from 5pm till 6pm and then from 7pm till 8pm.

Annual Open Exhibition at the Community School of Music and Arts

More opened and relaxed exhibition that features works of various size, techniques and artistry levels. It features works of emerging and established artists in their front hall area that has been setup as a gallery. The exhibition itself spreads alongside hall walls in the school. What I could glimpse from the windows, the show will have a fantastic selection of really good artworks. I need to add a note that the CSMA was founded in 1960 as a small school that would provide affordable art education to everyone, regardless of gender, race or income. It was founded by Clayton and Eunice Weber who used their private home for schooling.
The show will run from December 1, 2022 until January 27, 2023.
Opening reception will be on Friday, December 2, 5–8pm.
I will be present in the gallery from 6pm till 7pm.

It’s the Little Differences

I need to write a little bit about the Gallery Night Ithaca and the exhibiting practice that I have observed so far. Gallery Night Ithaca is an event that happens on the first Friday in the month when most of the galleries have their new exhibition openings. I think the idea was to basically run through all the shows from 5pm till 8pm. Although this could sound weird, I think the idea is that most of the shows will run for a month (or two) so you can come back during the month to enjoy each show individually. It is like speed run presentation. For example, on December´s list, there are over 20 shows. Now, there is a problem with this practice that I have noticed and that is, if you are not in the downtown region, you cannot expect visitors, and of course the whole thing is overwhelming, you cannot really dedicate your time to meet the artists. So, for example the Corners Gallery that is in Cayuga Hights will have its openings on Saturday because they cannot expect visitors to come Friday. Unlike the practice in Europe where a show can last, for example, for a solo exhibition from one day, to one to two, even three weeks, depending upon the interest, and where a-month and more longer exhibitions are usually part of the permanent collection, traveling exhibitions and exhibitions of high importance.

Legal Alien

Last few months I´ve been occupied by my status in the States, a legal alien. It feels like the very definition of it would be “you are allowed to be here but you don´t belong here and you are not welcomed”. This led me to reflect more on Sting´s lyrics in Englishman In New York, where I always felt that the singer is the one being cold and strange and now, I feel differently. It took me a while to stop complaining about the espresso and over-filled, paper cup, coffee-based liquids with ice. “I don’t drink drip brew, I drink espresso, my dear, served in a small tazza (cup)” and I could just go on…

But still it is much better than being Clandestino, although that sounds more real, more honest, so let’s remember the times when marihuana was illegal and you didn´t have to smell a burning skunk on every corner.

Oh, I’m an alien, I’m a legal alien
